Born in 1894 near Crook, he was a miner before he enlisted as a Private in 1914 in the 6th Battalion DLI. During the Great War, he was attached to the 151st Trench Mortar Battery of the 50th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 and the Bar to his MM in 1918.
He was also awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1918 as a Sergeant in command of a section of mortars during a German attack, when " he so encouraged his men by his fine example of coolness under very heavy bombardment that they fired every round of ammunition, and on retiring carried their gun through the barraged and heavily gassed area to the battery rear headquarters".
John Greenwood died at Crook in 1952.
